Genesis 1:1

This opening verse of not just the book of Genesis, but the entire cannonical bible, suggests the author posessed an intimate understanding of the foundation of the universe. The whole of the universe consists of time, space, and matter. “In the beginning” establishes the existence of time as a starting point that comingles with “the heavens”, as space, and “the earth”, as matter. In addition, verse 1 likely covers what Thomas Chalmers called “a period of indefinite antiquity”, where the universe was formed long before the existential earth.

With the statement “In the beginning, God”, we know that God existed before there was anything else. First there was God and then there was time, space, and matter.
